Journalism Project
11/7/16
We started this project by watching the famous movie All the President's Men this movie was based on the discovery of the Watergate Scandal by the Washington Post. We learned about major court cases in the Supreme Court like Sullivan vs. the New York Times. Then, we studied bias in journalism and how to balance our bias with evidence. After we complete the background knowledge section of this project as a class we created a mission statement for we decide …..
As a class, we decided to create an online news platform for the Animas community. All students created an article based on the mission statement we created. After a peer critique and conference with Ally, students sent our work to the editorial team for final refinements. The articles were put on a website created by our design team. Finally, we had a launch party where we present our work to our Animas High School Community.
I will take away from this project our perception of the world is controlled by the media. Most newspapers have some form of bias. When readers, read an article they may not be able to tell if the piece they are reading is biased or not. This could skew their opinion about the topic because they only read one side of the story. It is very important for the newspaper’s audience to understand if the newspaper is biased or if they are reading a biased article because they are not getting all the facts. I believe it is important to read both sides of the argument so you can form your own ideas about the world.
My journalistic skills improved tremendously in this project. I came into this project only having written one journalistic article before. After learning about bias, formatting news articles, and the impact of journalism on our society, I was more than prepared to write my own article. My biggest challenge was trying to write an opinion article without presenting too much bias. I wrote about Donald Trump, which is a topic I am extremely passionate about. My article was looking into the impact Donald Trump’s “locker room talk” and sexual assault allegations had on the American society. I struggled because I was trying to persuade Trump supporters to look at his actions and change their minds about who they were voting for. With the help of a teacher conference, I believe I overcame this. My teacher, Ally, gave me specific feedback to improve my argument. Next time, I write a journalistic type piece I will work harder to balance my bias with more evidence. If I added more evidence it could have made my argument a lot stronger.
Overall, I am very proud of the way my article turned out and that it made the features page of our online publication. I will leave this project with better writing skills and understanding of media.

Project Reflection
"This I Believe" originated as a radio program in the 1950's and NPR has adopted it since then. It was a radio program were all Americans could speak about their greatest beliefs. The rational behind this project is to understand how our beliefs have shaped our lives and experiences. I was truly excited to start this project I dove into writing right after I reflected on my beliefs. I decided my core belief is that I am blessed. As soon as I was done brainstorming I started writing about my time in Africa, the first time I remember feeling blessed. After two days of writing and refining, I completed my all 372 words of my essay.
The hardest part of this project was reflecting on my life's belief and trying to get my thoughts in writing. Even though I was challenged by this I grew tremendously. I collaborated with my peers and teacher to get my thoughts down and refine my essay. I specifically grew in this piece by adding strong descriptive language to emphasize my narrative. This is displayed when I write, "There I saw a boy about my age with a torn, dirt smudged shirt, worn-out flip flops caked in grimy mud standing on trash, and filthy torn shorts that he probably had since he was two." Next time I write a paper I would add more to my body paragraphs. In this essay my introduction was very powerful and I would love spread this emphasis throughout my entire work.
My favorite part of this project was writing my essay. This was the first big chunk of writing I had done since the summer and I was very grateful to get back into it. I am proudest of the organic flow in my essay. For example I brought back key words and phrases and used them throughout my piece. I used my story about Africa and brought it back to each paragraph.
After this project I believe, beliefs shape who you are. It has shaped me to focus my mind on gratitude evenmore. After learning about beliefs in class, I realized that without knowing it my life revolves around these beliefs. These ideas have played such an important role in growing up that I never really realized they were there until we discussed them in class.
