Rube Goldberg
12/9/15
In this project we made a Rube Goldberg Machine. My group's final product was making a piece of toast. The biggest struggle our group had was making the machine as consistent as possible. It seemed like whenever we had a step that worked the next would malfunction. Finally we got everything to work through a lot of refinements. My favorite part of the project was the freedom we had. I felt I could be very creative. Furthermore, I was pleasantly surprised got to use my problem solving skills to tackle any challenge my group came to. Additionally I learned many important physics concepts such as what Potential Energy is and how to calculate it, mass times gravity times height mgh. Another concept I learned was conservation of momentum which is mass one times velocity one equals mass two times velocity two M1V1=M2V2. Over all this project was worth while not only because of the valuable physics content I learned, but the growth I made in personal perseverance.
Talking point made at out Exhibition
What steps were most challenging to make?
The step that was the most challenging to perfect was the marble drop because the ledge the marble sits on was hard to make. The ledge had to be just right because it had to be sturdy enough to balance the marble but still wobbly to have the marble fall of when the other large marbles hit the pipe. We troubleshooted this by making multiple refinement and changing the ledge to the golf tee.
Describe a concept you learned
Potential Energy is equal to mass times gravity times height mgh. Also, when for example the marble is on the top of the ramp it has the most potential energy. Another concept we learned was conservation of momentum mass one time velocity one equals mass two times velocity 2 M1V1=M2V2.
What skills did you learn?
We learned how to construct a Rube Goldberg machine. Specifically, we learned how to solve persevere through tough steps that kept breaking. Also, we learned how to better collaborate as a group.
How Technology is Affecting Us Project
10/19/15
The essential question of this project states as follows, how technology is affecting us. My class was asked to produce an experiment, project summary, and a way to display the data you gathered while emcopassing the essential question. We did this project to apply the skills we learned in class these include formulating good questions and understanding the scientific method.
To start out with my reflections I will start by talking about how my group formulated a scientific question. Our question was what percentage of Animas High School students and faculty have Phantom Text Syndrome or Phantom Text Syndrome? We knew that this was a good question because it was testable and not too broad or narrow. When my group designed this project we had a fairly easy time because we were very interest on the topic, so we were very excited to start. We knew that the easiest way to find out our question was to send a survey out to 50 random student and faculty members and display that data in an infographic. Gathering data simple thanks to google forms and spread sheets All my group and I did was make a survey and google record our the responses and made us us spread sheet with them. Managing our group's time was very hard because not everyone in my group participated equally, I found that I was picking up their slack. Over all I think my group didn't collaborate that well becaue one person was not doing their share of the project so as a group we did not achieve our greatest potential.
