Brave New World Socratic Seminar
2/28/16

Autumn said that Brave New World is like Henry Ford’s assembly lines. I agree with this because the society in Brave New World values stability and Ford’s factories were very controlled. In an assembly line you create the same product and in the book they create multiple sets of twins. John didn’t fit into this society because  he was like a defective part created by an assembly line. When you make a defective part you throw it out. John felt outcasted, thrown out, of his society.

I feel I did very well in connecting the book to the outside world in this seminar. For example, I talked about how people living in the book Brave New World would not understand the freedom we have in America, my society. They think they have freedom, but in their society their only identity is there caste. In America you can create your own identity. Additionally, I think I have improved in my seminar skills over this year because I am more comfortable with myself. I am now not afraid to voice my opinion. I used to be afraid to make comments, but now I am more assertive when I am speaking.

I will take away a new appreciation for all emotions after reading this book. In this book they are always in a falsely happy state. They can not value their happiness because they do not have any pain. When characters in Brave New World are uncomfortable they take soma which puts them in a euphoric trance. I would rather feel all genuine emotions then just always be in a happy “haze” like they are when they are on soma.  In order for me to feel the benefits from being happy I must understand I can’t have happiness without sadness.
